| Report on the first Rick Evans benefit
concert: |
On
Friday, November 16 Rosemary and I took part in The Rick Evans Scholarship
Fund, along with another one hundred and fifty or so folks who all donated
$15 to see a spectacular show; we all got our money’s worth and then some.
Jazz guitarist Dennis Turner played the first hour as the audience was
filling in. Dennis also played between most of the following acts. The first
act to perform was the award winning Stivers School for the Arts Jazz
Orchestra under the direction of Claude Thomas. And then came our singers;
“Three Hot Ladies”: Cynthia Layne from Indianapolis. Mandy Gaines from
Cincinnati and beyond with our own Teresa Hunt finishing up. Deron Bell
served as the overall music director with his usual band doing the bulk of
but not all of the back up work as a number of other local musicians worked
at various time with the different ladies. I think Teresa was familiar with
all the players while Cynthia and Mandy were not but by the time it was over
all were really impressed with how well they were all able to pull off such
a beautiful performance.
All took place in the Ware Banquet Center located at Cincinnati and Bolander,
just a few blocks from downtown. I have to say this is one of the best
venues around. It’s clean as a pin, has a beautiful dance floor, a sizeable
stage with good acoustics. All food and drink prices are on the reasonable
side and they have free well lit parking with on site security. Rosemary and
I have been there for a dozen or so events and have always been pleased.
In summary, this was one of those events that you get much more than you pay
for. The entertainment was a rare happening, which you just don’t see
everyday. There was a nice crowd but like many times a bit short of
financial success. We have a ways to go to meet our goal for scholarships
(see the chart below). Please tell you friends and continue your support. –
