likes of which was different from anything I've heard in my life - an
outstanding jazz rendition!

Dave Brubeck, a
jazz musician who attained pop-star acclaim with recordings such as
"Take Five" and "Blue Rondo a la Turk," died Wednesday morning at
Norwalk Hospital, in Norwalk, Conn., said his longtime
manager-producer-conductor Russell Gloyd.
Brubeck was one day short of his 92nd birthday.
He died of heart failure, en route to "a regular treatment with his
cardiologist,” said Gloyd.
Throughout his career, Brubeck defied conventions
long imposed on jazz musicians. The tricky meters he played in “Take
Five” and other works transcended standard conceptions of swing rhythm.
The extended choral/symphonic works he penned and
performed around the world took him well outside the accepted boundaries
of jazz. And the concerts he brought to colleges across the country in
the 1950s shattered the then-long-held notion that jazz had no place in
academia.
As a pianist, he applied the classical influences
of his teacher, the French master Darius Milhaud, to jazz, playing with
an elegance of tone and phrase that supposedly were the antithesis of
the American sound.
As a humanist, he was at the forefront of
integration, playing black jazz clubs throughout the deep South in the
’50s, a point of pride for him.
"For as long as I’ve been playing jazz, people
have been trying to pigeonhole me,” he once told the Tribune. "Frankly,
labels bore me."
J. Webster
Smith (aka "Dr. Feel Good") will join with Kenny Baccus and Family to
present an evening of good music and pizza for the benefit of the local
Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind.
Join us for good
entertainment for a good cause.
The ShinSings Orchestra returns to Jazz Central to perform a concert for
the Gabriel Foundation to raise money to obtain musical instruments for
youth in our area. Steve Shininger (who sounds more like Frank Sinatra than
anybody I’ve heard) and the ShinSings Orchestra performed at Jazz Central
last January and at the last two Urban Nights for the Dayton Metro Library,
where Mark Willis told me these were the best Urban Night events ever. It
has come to my attention that this wonderful group will not be with us much
longer as Steve’s wife is being transferred by the Airforce, so come out and
enjoy while you can. The show runs from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm in Dayton’s
authentic jazz club. There will be door prizes; free parking and pizza by
the slice will be available.
Wade Baker returns
to Jazz Central to offer his style of a Christmas Party. Celebrate the
season with Jazz, Soul and R&B. Wade will be joined by a number of
friends and three outstanding vocalist.
Teresa Misty Monee' Gill has done a good deal for
Jazz Advocate in the past: She did a series of Lady Day events, in
addition she did a free gratis Lady Day tribute benefit concert for
the Gabriel Foundation and donated her talents in many tribute,
benefit and memorial concerts for our local jazz community.
She now needs our help: Hi Ron, I'm reaching out
to those that may be able to assist me. I've been searching for
employment for so long and am now 3 months in at my new job. My
clutch went out in my car so I no longer have transportation. If you
know anyone that would like to donate a vehicle to me I can repay
them through community service (vocals or spoken word) or go on a
payment plan.
If you can help, contact Misty on FaceBook at:
misty.monee@facebook.com
If that don’t work, contact Ron Gable at rgable1@gmail.com
Join us for a one night special when the Jazz Central Big Band

It’s that time again, another year – what
happened? In any case we have to start thinking in terms of promoting
some jazz events for next year and could use you help. If you could use
a little tax write-off, think of us we’re easy. A small readership
donation, a bit for the Gabriel Foundation, a Hundred Club membership or
a small corporate sponsorship, it all works for us. Believe me when I
tell you it’s the only thing that keeps us going.
“Hello Goliath, this
is David calling,” - pardon the triviality of an old man but the story
of David and Goliath seems somehow fitting to what I’m writing about!
Jazz Advocate has taken on a project we are calling the Gabriel
Foundation:
I was talking to a lady who lives in my apartment building and she
was telling me about her eleven year-old grandson who played alto
saxophone in an event with a group from the Stivers School for the Arts
jazz band. Of course she says he is very good and hoping to get into
Stivers next year at age twelve. She tells me he is presently renting
his horn through the school and he will need his own saxophone and the
family doesn’t have the money to buy one.
Well the young man received his saxophone and went on to audition
and became accepted into Stivers school. Jazz Advocate is presenting our
last Gabriel benefit concert of the year this month. We are looking for
sponsors and/or underwriters to help us carry this project into the new
year.
The
Gabriel is looking for young musicians who may be in need of an
instrument:
Musical Instrument
Referral Process:
The Gabriel Foundation is non-profit operating under Jazz
Advocate’s 501c3 and have formed collaboration with the DABICO Artist
Factory, a non-profit involved in musical education for youth in our
area. They in turn are affiliated with the BRD House Music Co and music
programs at the Kroc Center.
Between our two organizations we have the combined capability of
receiving, storing, refurbishing and presenting musical instruments to
youth in Dayton, Cincinnati and Columbus. It is our mutual desire to
transfer total ownership to qualified recipients because we feel
students who own their own musical instruments excel.
If you have a prospect that needs
an instrument, send me an email with the following information:
1.Name and contact information.
2.Musical referral (1) from school
and/or instructor.
3.Personal referral (3) from family
and friends.
4.Current grade point average.
5.What kind of musical do you want
and what do you intend to do with it.
6.Are you willing to help us
showcase your donated instrument at some of our events design to let
others see what we’re doing
with the Gabriel Foundation?
7.Are your parents or guardian
supportive of your music development and willing to work with the
Gabriel Foundation?
We
also are in need of musical instruments that can be refurbished into our
program. Again send me an email on what you might have to donate to a
good cause.

Editor’s
Ramblings:
I need some help in this promoting jazz thing; I’m having a time trying
to keep up. One thing I’ve meaning to send out for some time is a
request in update information on our venue’s list, which is just below
the jazz calendar on our website’s home page. We try to offer venue
information for each event on the calendar so folks can get an idea of
how to get to the event they may be interested in seeing. Over time I’m
sure some of these venues may not have jazz anymore or even be in
existence. So if you are aware of this being the case, please send me an
email so I can remove them. This could also apply to our jazz artist
registry. Another item I could use some help on is posting events on our
local jazz calendar. I need some volunteers that would be willing to
spend maybe an hour week adding event information from online postings
from a link or two that I would supply into an Excel spreadsheet, which
I would also supply and returning it to me so I can paste into our
website calendar. If we divide this project among a few people, who
would be willing, the time required for each would be small. Anyone
interested please contact me at rgable1@gmail.com.
