Blue Wisp
Calendar, July 2007
Greetings Jazz Fans,
I hope everybody is having a relaxing summer. Things have been chugging
along at the Blue Wisp, and tonight (6/30) we are featuring the amazing
trumpeter Brad Goode, who is back visiting for the first time in years. He
is truly a trumpet virtuoso, who has his own very distinct voice as an
improviser.
Here are the happenings for July:
July 6-7
The Vintage Keys Project , led by pianist Jim Connerley,
is a group performing music featuring the Wurlitzer and Fender Rhodes
electric pianos. The band performs classic arrangements from such artists
as Chick Corea, Freddie Hubbard, Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderley.
While much of their repertoire is from the sixties and seventies, music
by current artists such as Dave Douglas and Chris Potter is featured as
well. The group is led by Jim Connerley, and will feature John Zappa on
trumpet, Brent Gallaher on saxophones, Michael Sharfe on electric and
acoustic bass and Tony Franklin on drums.
July 13-14
Blue Wisp Big Band featured artists Al Nori and Joe Gaudio
return with their quintet, which plays a mix of classic hard bop and
standards.
July 20-21
Young guitarist, and recent CCM grad, Ian Ross leads his organ
trio at the Wisp. He is gaining a reputation and following throughout the
region. You can hear some of his music, courtesy of the magic of Youtube:

July 27-28 the club is closed to give manager Doug Scott a well
deserved five day vacation.
Thursdays in July we are featuring some of the best younger jazz musicians
in Cincinnati. Tenor sax player Oz Landesberg leads his group on
7/5, 12, and 26. On the 19th, recent CCM masters grad Dan Karlsberg
is releasing his first CD. As always on Wednesday night, we feature the
Blue Wisp Big Band, who has just released their newest live CD. |

Greetings Jazz Fans,
I am sending the Blue Wisp August calendar early because I am leaving the
country today and will be gone the rest of the month. As usual, the pdf
calendar is attached, so you can post it on your refrigerator, or
whatever. The featured weekend artists for August are:
August 3-4
Sandy Suskind is without question the finest jazz flutist in the
region. His sound is big, and his playing always soulful and passionate.
Imagine the fire and lines of Coltrane played with the sound of Herbie
Mann and you get the idea. He leads his own quartet for this weekend.
August 10-11
Drummer Art Gore has been leading his own band at Sonny’s Club for
years, which features Brent Gallaher, Jim Anderson, and Jim Connerley.
This weekend he brings the ensemble to the Wisp, playing original
compositions and jazz classics.
August 17-18
Vocalist Larry Kinley is a well established artist in the Greater
Cincinnati area jazz scene. His singing style is smooth, lyrical, and
understated, and his musicianship consummate. He has appeared with the
Frank Vincent Trio for years, performing long-running engagements at the
Harley Hotel, the Omni-Netherland Plaza, and the Dee Felice Café. He has
many concert appearances, including sharing the bill with Tony Bennett.
His TV credits have been both local and national including appearances on
variety shows hosted by Merv Griffin Show, Nick Clooney Show, and Vivian
Della Chiesa.
August 24-25
My band “Brasilia” returns to the Wisp, playing instrumental music by
Brazilian composers like Antonio Carlos Jobim, Hermeto Pascoal, and
others. The music is lively and rhythmic, covering styles like samba,
baiao, partito alto, and bossa nova, and features the remarkable Rusty
Burge on the vibraphone, along with bassist Steve Whipple, drummer Jake
Reed, and percussionist Stan Ginn. You can listen to some of the tunes at:

August 31
Trombonist/composer Marc Fields, a long time vet of the Ray Charles
Orchestra joins my trio. He writes wonderful music and plays with both
fire and finesse. Check his website to hear his music:

September 1
Saxophonist Randy Villars is well known for his work in "smooth jazz"
circles, having released three successful recordings on the Leviathan and
Positive Records. But he is a powerful straight ahead jazz player as well,
one of the best in the region for sure. More on Randy at:

We return to the relaxing piano trio format for the Thursday nights, and
of course the fantastic Blue Wisp Big Band holds forth every Wednesday
night. Thank you for your continuing support of live jazz in Cincinnati.
