Last week: We only got to one gig but it was a good one. Saxophonist Bill Burns, master of the big (baritone) and little (soprano), was joined by bassist Chris Slone and pianist Brian Cashwell at Pacchia Prima on Friday. Slone is young but he plays like a veteran. His work with the bow is outstanding. Cashwell spent some time in New York but came back to this area to raise his family. The trio closed its first set with Charlie Parker’s “Moose the Mooche” and ended the second with a medley of Bird’s “Donna Lee” and Parker’s Mood”. Along the way they played some Ellington and Jobim and Kermit the Frog’s “Rainbow Connection”.
