April is Jazz Appreciation Month - Spread the Word!

Jazz Advocate is the catalyst for our local jazz network.  We get the word out; you read about it, go to some of the events and hopefully tell your friends what a good time you had.  That way we keep our beloved jazz going and have a wonderful time in the process.  Some things you can do to really help out, first be an audience, second TELL YOUR FRIENDS and third write something about what you see and send it to me.  The more that's written, the more that's read and more folks get involved.  Rosemary and I really want to thank you for your involvement.  - Ron Gable

Debbie Gifford

After the Diane Schuur show at Gilly’s on 04/29/06, I had the pleasure to talk with Roger Hines and Debbie Gifford.  They told me about their upcoming gig at the Columbus Music Hall and invited us to come up.  I'll be honest, I didn't know what to expect from Ms. Gifford but I had just witnessed one of the best bass players I've seen and figured it would be worth the trip.  So with Johnny Mack as our guide, Rosemary and I made the trip and I'll tell you straight out I was not disappointed nor was my two sidekicks.  First off consider her back-up trio; Roger Hines (bass), Richard Lopez (piano) and Matt Wagner (drums), all from Columbus and as tight as any group as I've listened to.  I had read the bios on Hines and Gifford before the trip and on Lopez and Wagner since.  The back-up was a power-house and Debbie is the real deal.  She's a jazz singer similar in style to Ann Chamberlain with the addition of much graceful showmanship.   I would like to complement Rebecca Ogden for the job she’s done with the Columbus Music Hall and for all the jazz offerings; a wonderful jog, thank you! – Ron Gable
