CARMEN LUNDY
Something To Believe In

Justin Time
By Don Henke
Carmen Lundy's new recording is a Lundy family production. Her brother Curtis was the producer and plays bass on the album. Of the ten tunes, six were written by Carmen. They range from very good to okay to not so good.
The title tune and the opener, "In Love Again", are both beautiful originals. The former is a duet between Carmen and pianist Anthony Wonsey. The latter tune features an excellent saxophone solo by Mark Shim. "Happiness Is" and "Wild Child" are more contemporary but still very nice Shim plays soprano on "Wild Child". "Vu ja De" is definitely geared toward the rap generation with its incessant repetition of the title and "A Gift of Love" is more in the R&B bag with backing vocals, although Regina Carter does some very nice volin work on the tune.
The other songs are Alan and Marilyn Bergman's "The Windmills Of Your Mind", which has some good effects by Carter at the beginning; James Moody's "Moody's Mood For Love" as Carter's violin plays The part which Eddie Jefferson put the female's lyrics to; "It Might As Well Be Spring", taken at a sprightly tempo and featuring the rhythm section; and the Gershwins' "I Loves You Porgy", which begins with just piano accompaniment but then Curtis Lundy, drummer Victor Lewis and Shim come in and it may be the best thing on the record.
Carmen Lundy has been around for over two decades and has a voice that's instantly recognizable. Her dynamic range, something a lot of people don't pay attention to, is as good as any other singer out there. She and her brother are both well-known among musicians and can get good players to appear on her recordings. Anthony Wonsey not only is one of the most sought-after pianists for jazz gigs but also is an excellent accompanist, as this CD shows. Victor Lewis is one of the top drummers in the business and the guest artists --- Regina Carter, Mark Shim and percussionist Mayra Casales --- are among the best on their instruments. But the best instrument of all on the record is Carmen Lundy's voice.
