Hauer Music Swing Band

The Hauer Music Swing Band was formed in 1986 after a reunion of the Elton Dale Orchestra that some of the band members played in back in 1946-48.  Jerry Schmidt, lead trumpet, and manager of the band decided to get the guys together and have a rehearsal band.  Jerry Hauer let them use the Hauer Music Store on 1st Street for rehearsing, after the store closed on Tues. evenings.

In December of 1986 the band was asked to play in the Dayton, OH Christmas parade and for the Christmas tree lighting at Courthouse Square.  They started getting calls to play for other city affairs, and then some private organizations began to call, and soon it was no longer a rehearsal band.

Hauer Music Swing Band has played for many of the area Country Clubs, and in the Summer Concerts in The Parks from Ft. Recovery, OH to Blue Ash, OH.  For 6 seasons they have performed in the Swing Series at The Fraze Pavilion in Kettering, OH.

Together for 16 years, there have been changes in personnel and fortunately they have been able to get some new and younger men into the band.  The oldest member is Paul McCrea who plays trumpet and flugelhorn.  Paul is now in his late 80s and is one of the steadiest people in the band.

The band is like a family and a joy to work with.  Most of the players have played their instruments either professionally or semi-professionally in the Tri-state area (Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky).  They have an extremely large library of arrangements that covers a large spectrum of the actual big band era.   The Glenn Miller arrangements get the biggest play, along with the Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Harry James, Ted Heath, Artie Shaw, Woody Herman Orchestras greatest hits.

Sponsored by the Hauer Music Store, the band rehearses at least 2 times a month all year long.  The musicians say playing in the Hauer Music Swing Band is quite enjoyable after all these years, and they hope to continue as long as they can.

Saturday Night Out,,, Nov 9th, we went to see the Hauer Music Swing Band under the direction of
Bill Schneberger at the Tipp City Roller Mill Theater.
The band is comprised of 16 musicians from the Dayton, Ohio area who have played professionally or semi-professionally in most of the tri-state big bands since 1945.  The members range in age from 35 to 80 years old.  This group was started in 1987 by the band’s business manager, Jerry Schmidt, and is sponsored by The Hauer Music Store.  This band thrives on keeping the music of the Big Band era alive and many times features Audrey Wright on vocals.
